Etymology: "Charted" is the past tense and past participle of "chart", so its history is the history of the verb. "Chart" itself comes from the noun meaning a map, which goes back to Latin "charta" (a sheet of papyrus or paper), borrowed through Old French "charte" and Medieval Latin "carta". Adding "-ed" simply turned that verb into its past form, so "charted" meant "plotted on maps" from the start. The verb "chart" is ultimately the same word as "card", which is why the two are a doublet: English took the Latin "charta" once through French, giving "chart", and again through a different French route, giving "card". Both descend from the same papyrus-sheet sense, but they split into different meanings and shapes over the centuries. A card was originally a sheet of paper or a playing piece, while a chart was a map or table of information.
