Etymology: The Italian village of Cerreto di Spoleto, in Umbria, had a reputation so strong that its name became a byword for fraud. Its people were known as "cerretano," a word meaning "hawker" or "quack," because travelling sellers from the town peddled remedies and cure-alls across the region. That reputation shaped the Italian word "ciarlatano," which was itself a blend: "ciarlatore," meaning "chatterer," fused with "cerretano." The result combined the idea of a glib talker with the image of a dubious seller from one particular town. The word passed into Middle French as "charlatan," and from there into English. The original picture, then, is less a person who lies than a street-corner salesman whose patter is the product. Its sense of a pretender to expertise grew out of that market setting, where a confident voice mattered more than any genuine skill.
