Etymology: The horned viper of North Africa and the Near East takes its name from a Greek adjective, "kerastes," meaning "horned." The Greek word was built from "keras," horn, the same root that gives English "rhinoceros" its "-ceros" ending and "keratin" its first part. The viper's two small scale-like projections above the eyes gave the Greeks their image, and the name passed into Latin as "cerastes" before English borrowed it directly from Latin. Because the word was a transparent description rather than a coined name, its meaning has barely moved in over two thousand years: it still points to the horns of the animal. Ancient writers including Pliny applied it to the snake itself, which is why the Latin and English forms are essentially the same as the Greek.
