Etymology: "Cedarn" is a plain formation: the noun "cedar" with the suffix "-en" added, giving the sense "made of cedar" or "of cedar wood." The suffix is an old one. It comes down from Proto-Germanic "-īnaz," which became Old English "-en," the same ending that gives us "wooden," "golden" and "earthen." English has long attached it to material nouns to mean "made of" that material. The noun behind it, "cedar," reached English from Latin "cedrus," which in turn came from Greek "kedros," the name of the evergreen conifer. The adjective built on that noun is therefore a English-made formation, layered on a Greek tree name that passed through Latin.
