Caute

Part of speech: adverb

Definitions

  1. Expressed as a cautious or wary manner; serving as a warning to proceed carefully; used to imply the need for vigilance in one's actions
  2. Indicating careful attention or prudence is advised; functioning as a warning for caution; signaling potential risk that requires mindfulness
  3. Conveying a sense of deliberate caution in behavior; acting as an alert to avoid carelessness; suggesting that one should be especially watchful

Etymology: Latin "cautus" meant "wary" or "on guard," from the verb "cavēre," "to beware." That same verb gave English "cave," the schoolboy slang for "look out," which is simply the Latin imperative "cavē," "beware!" The root began as a warning, not a description of character. "Caute" is the adverbial form of that adjective, from Latin "cautē," meaning "in a cautious manner." It is a rare, learned borrowing, so its usage is limited. It belongs to the same family as "caveat," from the Latin "let him beware."
