Etymology: "Castynge" is a Middle English spelling of "casting," the verb "cast" with the suffix "-ing" added to name the act or its result. The root verb probably came into English from Old Norse "kasta," meaning "to throw," rather than from the Germanic stock that gave English most of its everyday verbs. Scandinavian speakers and English speakers were in close contact during the Viking Age, and many common Norse verbs were absorbed this way. The "-y-" in this spelling reflects how Middle English scribes wrote vowels and has no separate meaning. The original sense was physical: throwing, or flinging something out. The later sense of pouring molten metal into a mould grew from that same idea of sending material into a shape, and it is the sense most people now associate with the noun.
