Etymology: The plural form simply follows the singular "cartoonist", so the story lies in its parts. "Cartoon" arrived in English from French and Italian, where it referred to a full-size preparatory drawing for a painting, such as a sketch for a fresco or a tapestry. The meaning of "cartoon" as a humorous drawing came much later. The suffix "-ist" has a long lineage. It descends from ancient Greek "-istēs", which marked a person who practised or followed something, and it passed through Latin "-ista" and Old French "-iste" before entering English. English then attached it to "cartoon" to name someone who makes cartoons.
