Etymology: "Cardroom" is a plain compound of "card," the playing card, and "room." The compound is transparent, so the interest lies in its relationship to another word. "Chartroom," the room on a ship where navigational charts are kept and studied, comes from the same root word "chart," and the two terms have split apart into different senses. In a nautical setting "chartroom" names the space where a ship's navigator works, while "cardroom" moved in a different direction, toward the rooms set aside for playing cards. The two words are therefore doublets: the same origin, reached by separate routes, with different meanings. "Card" and "chart" were in fact once spelled alike in English, since both descend from the same source, and the spelling and sense of each diverged over time. The same root appears in "chart" for a map, and in the playing card sense of "card" as a stiff sheet of paper or pasteboard.
