Etymology: Latin "carrus" meant a wheeled vehicle, and it passed into Old French as "char", which also meant a cart or chariot. English took the word from that French source, so the modern sense is an old term for a wheeled vehicle, applied to a much newer machine. The same spelling also names something unrelated in computing. In the Lisp programming language, "car" is the function that returns the first half of a paired structure. The name survives from the original hardware Lisp ran on, and it has no meaning today.
