Etymology: "Canoemen" is simply the plural of "canoeman," a person who paddles or handles a canoe. The base word, "canoe," traces back to the Taíno "kanowa," a word from the Arawakan-speaking peoples of the Caribbean, which Spanish colonists recorded as "canoa" and which English later adopted as "canoe." The second element, "-man," is an ordinary English word for a person, descended from Old English "mann," which has meant a human being since before the Norman period. Joining "canoe" and "-man" produced a straightforward compound describing someone who works with canoes, the same pattern as "boatman" or "ferryman."
