Canoeman

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A person who paddles, steers, or travels by canoe
  2. Someone skilled in operating and navigating a canoe
  3. A person who rows or propels a canoe through water

Etymology: Canoe came into English from Spanish "canoa," which in turn was borrowed from Taíno "kanoa," the word used by the Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean for their dugout boats. Explorers and settlers carried the term back to Europe in the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and English took it from Spanish, so the boat's name arrived with a traveler's accent rather than through any Germanic or Latin route. Canoeman is a plain compound: "canoe" with the English suffix "-man," which has been used since Old English, from a root meaning "human being," to denote a person who works with or belongs to something. A canoeman is simply someone who paddles or handles a canoe, and the word is built entirely from these two parts.
