Etymology: The Greek word "kalogeros" was a compound meaning "good old man," built from "kalos" (beautiful, fine, good) and "geras" (old age). Its literal sense was "venerable," and it was applied to monks, who were regarded as elders of the faith. Because so many Greek monks were old, the name simply described their respected seniority rather than any worldly status. The word then travelled westward through Italian, where it became "caloiero," before reaching French as "caloyer." English borrowed the French form, and the word has stayed a specialist term for monks of the Greek Orthodox tradition, often in historical or travel writing about Byzantine and Levantine religious life.
