Etymology: Cab is itself a clipped word. It comes from "cabriolet," a light two-wheeled carriage pulled by a single horse, which French borrowed from Italian "capriolo," meaning "leap" or "caper," an allusion to the carriage's bouncing motion. English shortened the French term to "cab" and applied it to hired carriages, and later to the motor vehicles that replaced them. A driver is simply the person who drives, so a cabdriver is the one who steers the hired vehicle. The compound is transparent in a way that many older English words are not: its two parts still say exactly what the whole means. The short form "cab" has outlived the long "cabriolet" that gave it birth, so a modern reader meets only the clipped version.
