Etymology: The word "busboy" is a clipping of "omnibus," which in American restaurant slang of the early twentieth century meant an assistant waiter. The "omnibus" name was a joke of sorts: the assistant did a little of everything, carrying dishes, refilling water, and clearing tables, much as a horse-drawn omnibus carried passengers of every sort. The first half of the older word was trimmed down to "bus," and "boy" was added as the common term for a young male servant. The result is a word whose first syllable is a shortened piece of a Latin-derived term. "Omnibus" itself comes from the Latin dative plural meaning "for all," which is why a vehicle for everyone and a waiter for every chore share a single root.
