Bunded
Part of speech: verb
Definitions
- Surrounded by a low earthen or concrete wall built to contain spilled liquid, such as fuel stored in a tank
- Enclosed within a protective embankment designed to hold back leaks from storage tanks or industrial sites
- Fenced in by a raised barrier that prevents hazardous liquids from escaping into the surrounding ground
Etymology: "Bunded" is the simple past and past participle of "bund," so its history is that of the base verb. "Bund" has two unrelated sources. One is German "Bund," meaning alliance or league, which is a doublet of "bond" and "band." The other is Hindustani "band," from Classical Persian "band," which is a doublet of Hindi "bandh." The embankment sense most likely comes from this second strand.
Synonyms: embanked, dyked
