Bumphead
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A type of fish characterized by a prominent, rounded forehead and typically found in coral reef environments
- Referring to a particular species known for its unique cranial shape and coloration, commonly inhabiting warm waters
- A marine creature distinguished by its distinctively shaped head, often recognized for its vibrant appearance and social behavior in the ocean
Etymology: The fish is named for its forehead. Adult males, especially, develop a large, rounded bulge on top of the head, and the name describes that swelling. The scientific name tells the same story in Greek: the genus "Bolbometopon" combines "bolbos," meaning bulb, and "metopon," meaning forehead. Naturalists coined it from these classical roots, so the ancient Greeks never used it. The English name is a plain compound of two old words. "Head" comes from Old English "heafod." "Bump" is a noun for a rounded swelling, and its origin is uncertain, though it is probably imitative of the sound of a knock. Put together, the words describe a fish with a knocked-out-looking, lumpy forehead.
