Etymology: "Budgetwise" is a plain compound: the noun "budget" joined to the suffix "-wise," which means "in the manner or respect of," as in "clockwise" or "likewise." Put together, the word describes doing something in a way that stays within financial limits, so a budgetwise shopper keeps spending in line with a planned budget. The suffix does most of the work here. "-wise" comes from Old English "wise," meaning "manner" or "way," and it has long been attached to nouns to produce adverbs and adjectives describing how something is done or regarded. Modern English has produced many such formations, and "budgetwise" follows the same pattern as "moneywise" or "healthwise," using the financial sense of "budget" to name the respect in which the thing is judged.
