Etymology: The spelling "brummell" is a variant of Bramhall, a name built from two Old English words: "brōm," meaning broom (the yellow-flowered shrub), and "healh," meaning a corner, angle or nook. The name therefore describes a place where broom grew, a sheltered spot marked by the plant. Names like this were often given to farmsteads and fields, and surnames were frequently taken from such places, so the original sense of the name was a literal description of the land.
