Etymology: Birmingham, the English industrial city, has been a major center of metalworking for centuries, and its name became a byword for cheap goods. "Brummagem" is simply the local dialect form of "Birmingham," and it came to describe anything showy that looked more valuable than it was. The city's workshops turned out a huge range of inexpensive trinkets, buttons and imitation jewelry, and the reputation of those goods attached itself to the place name. The adjective therefore carries a double judgment: the item looks impressive, but it lacks real substance. The phrase "brummagem coin," for instance, referred to counterfeit or base money struck from cheap metal, which shows how quickly the association with Birmingham's mass-produced wares became a sign of fakery.
