Bruh
Part of speech: interjection
Definitions
- Informal slang used to address a friend or to voice disbelief, frustration or exasperation at something someone just said or did
- A casual exclamation, often directed at a friend, that expresses incredulity, annoyance or mild disappointment in a situation
- Slang interjection of informal speech, typically used as a form of address or to show astonishment or weary disapproval
Etymology: Bruh comes from "brother," shortened by its sound rather than its spelling. In African-American Vernacular English, speakers dropped the unstressed final syllable of "brother," so /ˈbɹʌðɚ/ became /bɹʌ/. The spelling with the final "h" shows that the sound was kept, with the "th" and "er" gone. This makes it a different kind of shortening from "bro," which clips the written form of "brother" instead. Bruh appeared earlier and may have helped shape other slang words spelled with a final "h."
Synonyms: bro, dude
