Brooklyner

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A person who was born in or lives in Brooklyn, the borough of New York City
  2. Someone who comes from or makes their home in Brooklyn, one of the five boroughs of New York City
  3. A resident or native of the New York City borough of Brooklyn

Etymology: Brooklyn takes its name from the Dutch town of Breukelen, the name given by Dutch settlers in the 1630s to the village on western Long Island that they founded as Breukelen. The "-er" ending is the ordinary English suffix that turns a place into a resident: a New Yorker lives in New York, and a Brooklyner lives in Brooklyn. The Dutch town name itself is thought to mean "broken land," from words meaning marshy ground, though that is a conjectural sense rather than something the settlers recorded. The form "Brooklynite" is also used for the same sense, and it follows the older pattern of "-ite" attached to place names, as in Londoner's counterpart "Londonite." Both are standard in American usage, though "Brooklynite" is more common in print. "Brooklyner" is the more direct coinage, built straight onto the place name with no additional ending.
