Etymology: "Brevetted" is the past tense and past participle of "brevet," a verb meaning to promote an officer to a higher rank in name only, usually as an honor, without the pay or duties that normally come with it. The noun "brevet" entered Middle English meaning "official letter." It came from Anglo-Norman, where it was a diminutive of "bref," meaning "letter," which in turn comes from Latin "brevis," meaning "short." That makes it a close relative of "brief," which shares the same Latin root and once described a short written document.
