Etymology: Before it named a country, the name belonged to a tree. Portuguese "brasil" meant brazilwood, a dyewood valued for its deep red, and it was built on "brasa," meaning ember, so the timber was described as red like a glowing coal. The land Portuguese sailors reached was first called "Terra do Brasil," the land of the wood, and the country took its name from the timber that drew traders there. A second, unrelated thread runs through Irish. The English form descends from "Ó Breasail," a byname meaning "strife," and the same name was given to a legendary island west of Ireland.

Synonyms: Brazilian Federation, Brazilian Republic
