Etymology: This is a plural form, so it is the plural of "bougainvillea", the name of a tropical climbing shrub with papery, brightly coloured bracts. The singular is a botanical genus name coined in honour of Louis Antoine de Bougainville, the French admiral and explorer (1729–1811), whose voyages took him around the globe and whose name ended up on a flowering plant he never saw in its cultivated form. The name was formed by taking Bougainville's surname, adding the Latinising ending "-a", a common practice for naming plant genera, and producing "Bougainvillea". The plant was named in this way by botanists in the wake of Bougainville's expeditions, which brought back many specimens from the Pacific and South America. The name thus honours a man rather than describing the plant itself.
