Botche

Part of speech: verb, noun

Definitions

  1. To mess something up or do it poorly
  2. To perform a task ineptly, resulting in substandard quality or function
  3. To fail in execution, particularly in a way that undermines the intended outcome

Etymology: Before it meant bungling, "botch" meant mending. In Middle English, to botch was to patch or repair something, especially clothing, and a "botcher" was a menders' trade. Patched work showed its rough seams and uneven stitching, so the sense of shoddy workmanship grew naturally out of that makeshift repair. Its ultimate origin is uncertain. Some dictionaries suggest a possible link to Old French "bochier", meaning to strike or stamp, but this connection is not confirmed.
