Etymology: "Botanizes" is the third-person singular present form of "botanize," so it simply inherits the verb's history. "Botanize" was formed in English from "botany," which comes from the Greek "botanē," meaning "pasture" or "herbage," and ultimately from "boskein," "to feed, graze." The verb itself is an 18th-century coinage, appearing in the 1700s as naturalists took up plant-collecting as a serious pursuit. The noun "botany" came into English in the 17th century, and "botanize" followed it, with the -ize suffix ("to make into, to practise") attached to the noun. Its earliest sense was literal: to go out and gather plants for study, often on foot across fields and hillsides.
