Etymology: "Bonuses" is the plural of "bonus," which English borrowed from the Latin "bonus," meaning "good." The same Latin root also gave English "bona," a doublet that entered English in legal use for goods or property. An employee's bonus is, in effect, a good thing added on top of regular pay.
