Etymology: In the Domesday Book, the Lancashire town now called Bolton is recorded as Bodeltone. The first element comes from Old English "botl" or "bold", meaning a home, hall or manor, the principal building of a landholding. The second element, "tun", originally meant an enclosure and later came to mean a farmstead, village or town. Together, the name describes a settlement built around a lord's dwelling and the land attached to it. The "-ton" ending in English place names usually follows this pattern, pairing "tun" with a word for a building or estate, and the sense of enclosure survives in the idea of a fenced farm that grew into a village.
