Boatwoman

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A woman who navigates, steers, or otherwise operates a boat
  2. A female crew member or operator responsible for managing or handling a boat
  3. A woman employed or skilled in the work of sailing, rowing, or piloting a boat

Etymology: "Boatwoman" is a plain compound of "boat" and "woman," with no special story behind it. The first part is the familiar Old English "bāt," a word for a small open vessel, and the second is "woman," the female counterpart of "man." Put together, they name a woman who works a boat, whether ferrying passengers across a river, carrying goods, or steering a barge. Because the parts are so transparent, the word needs little explanation. It follows the same pattern as "boatman," with the gender stated outright in the second half, and speakers can form and understand it on the spot without any special knowledge of its history.
