Etymology: The "blue" in this word refers to the paper, not the drawing. Blueprints were copies of architectural and engineering drawings made by a photographic process invented by the English astronomer John Herschel, which produced white lines on a blue background. The name stuck to the copies, and then to the plans themselves, whatever their colour. "Blueprint" is a compound of "blue" and "print," and "blueprinter" adds the agent suffix "-er," the same ending found in "printer" and "baker." It names a person who produces such plans. Because "blueprint" is now often used figuratively for any detailed plan, the noun has also been applied to people who devise the detailed schemes behind a project, though it remains most common in its literal sense.
