Etymology: Blogged is simply the past tense of "blog", so the real story is in the verb's own history. "Weblog" was coined in 1997 by Jorn Barger, and in 1999 the shortened form "blog" appeared. The OED dates the shortening to 23 May 1999 and credits it to Peter Merholz, who joked on his site that he was "blogging" the word, splitting it into "we blog". That rebracketing, reading "weblog" as "we blog", is what made the verb possible: once "blog" was a noun, people needed a verb for posting to one. "Blog" is therefore a clipped compound of "web" and "log", where "log" comes from the ship's logbook, a record of entries kept over time. Its roots run back to "logbook" in English, so the word links a nautical record of distance travelled to a personal record of daily thoughts.
