Etymology: "Blissless" is a plain compound: "bliss" with the suffix "-less," meaning "without." The base "bliss" comes from Old English "blis," a word for joy and gladness, and the suffix "-less" comes from Old English "-lēas," which meant "free from" or "lacking" and is still productive in English today, as in "fearless" or "endless." Putting the two together produces a word meaning, quite literally, "without bliss." Because "-less" attaches so readily to nouns, English speakers can form such adjectives on demand, and "blissless" describes someone whose life is missing that deep, untroubled happiness rather than someone who is merely unhappy in a passing way.
