Blepharo
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- An anatomical term referring to the eyelid or structures associated with it
- a prefix often used in medical terminology related to eye conditions
- describing surgical procedures involving the eyelid
Etymology: Ancient Greek "blépharon" meant "eyelid," and it could also mean "eyelash," since the two were closely linked in how the Greeks thought about the eye. Medical writers later took the stem and used it as a combining form, a building block joined to other elements rather than a standalone English noun. Medicine uses the stem at the front of many terms for eyelid conditions and procedures. Blepharitis names inflammation of the lid margins, and blepharoplasty is surgery to reshape the lids. Both follow the same pattern: the root "blepharo-" plus a descriptive ending, so once a reader recognizes the stem, the rest of this vocabulary becomes much easier to decode.
