Etymology: Before it named a colour, the root behind this word meant "burnt." Old English "blæc" covered black, dark, and ink, and it descends from Proto-Germanic "blakaz," meaning "burnt." That word probably goes back to a prehistoric root meaning "to burn, shine," which also gave Latin "flagrare" ("to burn") and Greek "phlox" ("flame"). The verb grew from the adjective. To black something was to make it black, whether by dyeing it or marking it with black. Later it took on the senses of losing consciousness and of blotting out printed or written material so that it cannot be read.
