Etymology: Bioprinting is a compound built from two parts with very different ancestries. The "bio-" element comes from ancient Greek "bios," meaning life, which is a root with a long pedigree stretching back to the reconstructed Indo-European ancestor of many European languages. "Printing" is the older and more familiar half, a word for pressing ink or images onto a surface. The combination is modern. Joining "bio-" to an existing English noun is a common way of naming new fields, and "bioprinting" follows that pattern: it describes printing that uses living material rather than ink. The method layers cells, often suspended in a gel-like carrier, one thin stratum at a time, building tissue in shapes a printer's head traces out. The word's meaning therefore stays close to its parts, with "bio-" marking the living cargo and "printing" describing the layer-by-layer deposition.
