Etymology: Biogeographers study where species live on Earth and why they live there, and the word is a plain modern compound. Its first half, "bio-", comes from the Ancient Greek "bíos", meaning "life," and its second half is "geographer," itself built from "geo-" (from Ancient Greek "gaîa" or "gê," meaning "earth") and the suffix "-grapher," meaning one who writes or describes. Put together, the word literally names someone who describes life across the Earth's surface. The compound is recent. It was assembled in English from these classical building blocks, not inherited from the ancient world, so no Greek or Roman scholar ever used it. Its meaning shows up clearly in the parts: "bio-" points to living things, "geo-" to the planet, and "-grapher" to the work of recording and describing.
Synonyms: biogeography experts, biogeographic scientists, biogeographic researchers, distribution ecologists, ecogeographers
