Etymology: "Biofeedbacks" is simply the plural of "biofeedback," which refers to monitoring one's own bodily signals, such as heart rate, muscle tension or skin temperature, and learning to control them through a display or sound that reports them back in real time. The base word is a compound of "bio-," from Greek "bios" meaning "life," and "feedback," a term from electrical engineering and cybernetics for returning part of a system's output as input. Joining them created a label for a technique in which a living body is treated as a system that can be tuned by watching its own signals. The term first appeared around 1970 in the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology, at the point when researchers were beginning to show that people could learn voluntary control over functions once thought to be automatic.
