Biliverdin
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A green pigment formed from the breakdown of hemoglobin in the body that plays a role in the process of heme catabolism ; a biological compound produced when red blood cells are degraded, commonly seen as a precursor to bilirubin ; a natural greenish substance resulting from the enzymatic conversion of heme during blood cell recycling and involved in bilirubin metabolism
- A metabolic product arising from the degradation of heme, exhibiting a green coloration and serving as an intermediate in the conversion to bilirubin ; a pigment created when the heme component of hemoglobin is broken down in organisms, contributing to the color changes in bruises ; a naturally occurring bile pigment produced during red blood cell destruction that eventually transforms into bilirubin in the liver
- A green tetrapyrrolic bile pigment generated by enzymatic cleavage of heme during red blood cell senescence and degradation ; a compound formed in the catabolic pathway of blood pigment where hemoglobin is dismantled, temporarily accumulating as a green pigment ; an intermediate substance in the heme breakdown pathway responsible for the characteristic green color seen in healing bruises before it converts to yellow bilirubin
Etymology: Biliverdin is a modern scientific coinage, built from pieces of two languages that were never meant to meet. Its first part, "bili-", comes from Latin "bilis", meaning bile, the digestive fluid in which the pigment is found. The ending "-in" is the standard chemists' suffix for a compound of this kind. The middle part, "verde", is Italian for green, a choice that puzzles many readers until one sees how the word was assembled: it was formed by analysing the pigment's name in a way that treated the Italian word as the source of its colour. The term was coined in German, and English took it up as international scientific vocabulary, so it spread across European languages in much the same form. Its parts make the meaning plain without needing a dictionary: a green substance found in bile. The pigment is the green compound produced when the body breaks down haem, the iron-containing part of haemoglobin from old red blood cells.
