Etymology: The rim that holds a gemstone in a ring or watch is named after a finger. Its ancestor, Breton "bizou" or "bisou", meant a ring worn on the finger, and that in turn came from Breton "biz", "finger". The word passed into French as "bisel", a dialect variant of "biseau" (a sloping edge), which was itself shaped by association with "bijou" (jewel). English borrowed it from French, so the setting that grips a stone and the ring once worn on a finger are linked through a Celtic word for the digit. The word has nothing to do with "bevel", despite the similar sound and the similar sense of a slanted edge. "Bevel" comes from a different French source, so the two are unrelated.
