Etymology: "Betwixt" is a fossil of an older way of saying "between." Its Old English ancestor, "betweox," was built from a word meaning "two" and a little prefix, so the core idea was something like "in the twofold space." The root that gave it "two" also sits behind the German "zwischen" and the Dutch "tussen," which mean the same thing, so these words are cousins that all grew from the notion of a gap between a pair. The prefix "be-" carries the sense of "by, near, around," and the second half, "twixt," is a variant of "twist" in the old sense of "two-fold" or "double." English speakers eventually settled on "between" as the everyday form, leaving "betwixt" to survive mostly in fixed phrases and deliberately archaic or poetic writing.
