Etymology: Spangle first appeared in English as a noun for a small, thin piece of shining metal sewn onto cloth for decoration, and the verb "bespangle" grew out of it by attaching the prefix "be-", meaning "over" or "all over." To bespangle something was to cover it with spangles. The "be-" element is an old English prefix that once had a far wider role, turning nouns and adjectives into verbs with the sense of covering or surrounding, as in "besmear" or "bedew." The past form "bespangled" therefore carries the same idea: something has been spangled all over. Its meaning today, decorated with numerous small glittering details, stays close to that literal image of a surface scattered with tiny sparkling pieces.
