Etymology: Visitors to Kassel in Germany can climb a wooded hillside where a colossal copper statue of Hercules stands atop an octagonal pyramid, above a cascade of water tumbling down terraces. The German name for this kind of landscape is "Bergpark," a compound of "Berg," meaning mountain or hill, and "Park." "Berg" is an old Germanic word related to English "barrow," the Old English term for a burial mound, so both share the sense of a raised earthen rise. "Park" reached German from French, where "parc" meant an enclosed tract of land, often for game. English borrowed the same word for enclosed grounds. The compound is literal: the hill is the defining feature, and the park is a designed landscape built on it. Rather than flat lawns, a Bergpark uses sloping ground for terraces, waterworks and woodland.
Synonyms: mountain park, hill park
