Etymology: A pear gave this citrus its name. Turkish speakers called a fine variety of pear "beg armudi," roughly "lord's pear," combining "beg" (lord) and "armut" (pear). The name passed into Italian as "bergamotta," and was then applied to a citrus fruit whose fragrant peel was prized. The popular idea that the name comes from the Italian city of Bergamo is widespread, but the Turkish origin is the better-supported explanation. The name then moved into French as "bergamote" and into English from there. The fruit is valued mainly for the essential oil pressed from its peel, which gives it its place in perfumery and in flavouring. It is best known to tea drinkers as the flavour in Earl Grey tea.
