Beneficiated

Etymology: "Beneficiated" describes ore or other raw material that has been treated to raise its grade, typically by crushing, washing, or separating out the waste rock before it is smelted. The verb was borrowed from Spanish "beneficiar", which meant both "to benefit" and, in the mining sense, "to work mines". That second sense is the surprise: a word that sounds like a general term of kindness was, in Spanish, a term of the mine works, and English took it over with that technical meaning intact. The Spanish verb itself comes from Latin "beneficium", a favour or kindness, built from "bene" ("well") and "facere" ("to do"). Its path into English went through Spanish rather than directly from Latin, which is why the mining sense appears in the English word while the Latin root points only toward goodness and service.
