Etymology: "Beatkeeper" is a transparent compound: one who keeps the beat. Its first half, "beat", comes from Old English "beatan", meaning to strike or hammer. The sense of a regular stroke or pulse grew from repeated blows, and music, which is often marked by striking a drum, a foot, or a hand, took up that sense. The second half, "keeper", comes from Old English "cēpere", from "cēpan", to take hold of or watch over. A keeper maintains or looks after something, so a beatkeeper maintains the pulse for others, usually a drummer or bassist who holds the rhythm steady while other players move around it.
