Battels
Part of speech: noun

Etymology: Few people would guess that a word for a college bill began as a word for combat. It descends from Middle English "batel" and Old French "bataille", which came from Late Latin "battualia", a term for military exercises. That was built on Latin "battuo", meaning to strike, beat, or fight, and the Latin verb itself comes from a Gaulish root. "Battel" is a doublet of "battle" and "battalia", meaning that all three came into English by different routes from the same source. The singular "battel" is rarely used on its own, and the form that survives in everyday use is the plural, "battels", which refers to itemized college bills, especially at Oxford and Cambridge.
