Batata
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A type of starchy root vegetable commonly known as sweet potato
- Often utilized in various cuisines, particularly in Latin American and Caribbean dishes, as a versatile and nutritious food source
- This tuber is characterized by its sweet flavor and is distinguished from regular potatoes by its orange or purple flesh
Etymology: The sweet potato and the ordinary potato were once confused with each other, and the name "batata" is the reason. Spanish explorers in the Caribbean encountered the tuber under a Taíno name, "batata", and carried it back to Europe, where it was used for the sweet potato. The ordinary potato, which came from the Andes, was a different plant, but Spanish speakers applied the same word to it, and English eventually received both. The two words are doublets: "potato" came through Spanish "patata" from the same Taíno source, so the English language ended up with two forms of one name for two different plants.
