Etymology: Bargemaster is about as transparent as compounds get: it joins "barge," a flat-bottomed vessel used for carrying goods on rivers and canals, with "master," the person in charge of a ship or vessel. In the sense of someone with authority over a vessel, it has been used in English for centuries, and the same pattern produced terms like shipmaster and harbourmaster.
