Etymology: In Japanese woodblock printing, a baren is a flat, round hand pad, traditionally made of coiled cord wrapped in bamboo sheath. The printer rubs it across the back of a sheet of paper laid over an inked block, pressing the ink evenly into the grain of the paper. The Japanese term is written 馬楝, and English borrowed it from that language for the tool itself.
