Etymology: Ballocks is an alternative spelling of "bollocks," and both trace back to Old English "beallucas," the plural of "bealluc," meaning testicle. The Old English form was itself a plural, so the singular "ballok" (later "bollock") was formed afterward by back-formation from it, and the plural ending "-s" was eventually read as part of the stem. In other words, English speakers effectively created a new singular from a word that was already plural, a common pattern when a plural ending is mistaken for a grammatical suffix. The word has a long, respectable pedigree in English, appearing in Middle English as "ballokes." Its survival as a vulgar term is a matter of later social attitudes rather than any change in its basic meaning, which has remained anatomical throughout. The same root also gave us "cullion," a related term for a base or contemptible fellow, which suggests the word's associations with lowliness and crudeness were already present long ago.
